The gel from the Aloe vera leaf has been used for centuries as a topical remedy for minor burns, cuts, and other skin irritations. Taken internally, Aloe juice or encapsulated powder is used as a laxative. Some of the sugar compounds found in Aloe have been promoted as immune system stimulants, although the data in this regard is limited.

The active constituents for aloe’s laxative effect are known as anthraquinone glycosides, which are converted by intestinal bacteria into aglycones. The active compounds responsible for aloe’s wound healing properties are less well-described but are likely a combination of several saccharide molecules.
